7Analytics Shapes Resilient Cities with Building-level Flood-risk Predictions

It’s not surprising that 7Analytics—a startup bringing unprecedented granularity to flood-risk predictions—was founded in Bergen, Norway, which is often called the rain capital of Europe.

7Analytics’s CEO and Co-founder Helge Jørgensen was working at a zoning-planning company focused on building climate-resilient cities when he and three co-founders decided asset owners, insurers, city planners, and others needed much more specific predictions to prepare for flooding events.

Today, flood-risk predictions are typically calculated on the zip-code level. 7Analytics is disrupting the market by providing projections on the per-building level, getting as granular as a three-foot-by-three-foot area.

The startup also pays close attention to how the surrounding land is used—what areas are paved, for example—in its predictions. In all, 7Analytics analyzes more than 600 physical characteristics in its predictions, using machine learning to determine which parameters are the most impactful in a given situation. Its tech represents a data-processing step change and can be applied to all types of flooding.

The 7Analytics team aspires to reshape how we construct cities. Climate change is worsening flooding and will continue to do so in the years to come, but Jørgensen also emphasizes the role of “bad zoning within watersheds.” Poor planning decisions that misunderstand how changes in land use impact water flow can promote flooding, he explains.

“To build climate resilience for cities, we need to look at how we’re developing cities and make them more sustainable,” he says. “This data can guide the government, insurance companies, and everyone else to where they should focus their efforts.”

7Analytics offers both long-term projections—ideal for insurers—and real-time predictions that start three days before an expected flooding event, such as a storm. Its hourly updates, targeted to asset holders, provide granular detail on the likelihood, extent, and more of flooding.

The 20-person startup raised a €4M seed round in May 2024 and plans to raise a Series A in 2026. Scaling and ramping up sales are its major focuses for 2025.

7Analytics joined Greentown Boston last year, using the incubator as an entry point into the U.S. market.

“It’s super important for startups to be in an environment like an incubator, because then you’re sitting together with companies facing the same problems as you are,” Jørgensen says. “Since I was coming here alone, it’s good to be within a community. There are people you can ask questions to, you can build a network and connect with partners.”
