About the company
Seabound is a London-based climatetech startup that builds onboard carbon capture equipment for ships. Founded in late 2021, Seabound recently completed its first pilot project onboard a 3200 TEU container ship together with Lomar Shipping and Hapag Lloyd. The company has raised $6.5M to date from Lowercarbon Capital, Y Combinator, Eastern Pacific Shipping, and Collaborative Fund and won £1.2M in grant funding from the UK government through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition.
About the solution
Seabound’s containerized carbon capture equipment can be installed on existing or new ships to trap up to 95% of CO2 in the exhaust gas. The company is developing a uniquely compact and modular form of calcium looping technology, in which the CO2 is exposed to calcium oxide to transform and trap it into calcium carbonate. Onshore, the calcium carbonate can then be sold for use as building materials or post-processed to recycle the calcium carbonate and sequester or utilize the pure CO2.
