About the company

Blackburn Energy’s RelGen system successfully creates inexpensive, clean and “quiet” electric power in long haul trucks, enhancing driver comfort, addressing EPA restrictions on engine idling, reducing maintenance cost, providing significant fuel savings, and increasing truck up-time.

About the solution

RelGen™ turns any truck into a mobile platform for the creation, storage and delivery of renewable energy

  • Converts the kinetic energy lost during breaking/gliding into clean, low cost electricity
  • Reduces or eliminates the need to idle your engine, saving fuel and increasing driver comfort
  • Doubles your current 12-volt charging capacity
  • Capable of 12, 24, and 48-volt configurations
  • Increases the fuel economy of trucks by replacing mechanical belt driven components, currently restrained by a lack of available power, with electric units i.e. converting mechanical power steering pumps, fuel pumps and cooling fans to 12, 24 and 48-volt electric components without the need to manage a multi-volt conversion

Blackburn Energy’s Solution:

Blackburn’s patented solution captures the rotational force of the vehicle’s drive shaft through a proprietary power takeoff that transmits it to an alternator via a belt. This energy is captured and stored for later use with almost any accessory – like electric APU’s or lift gates.

  • No clutches or additional mechanical components – Blackburn’s algorithm and power electronics create a “smart alternator” that can be instructed when to turn on and off.
  • Maintains factory center bearing bracket and mounts directly into the factory mounting points. The unit clamps onto the frame rails without drilling holes or welding.
  • The system requires no changes to power train geometry, can be fit to most Class 7 or 8 trucks, and installs in about 4 hours with no specialized tools or training required.
