About the Company

Today, chemicals ranging from complex pharmaceuticals to basic commodities are made with heat from fossil fuels, in processes that are energy inefficient and polluting. Adiabatic Materials developed a radically new way to produce chemicals using electricity instead of heat. This approach is broadly applicable, chemically mild, and both highly selective and efficient. It allows Adiabatic Materials to produce the desired products with exceptionally high purity and yields, without undesired byproducts.

About the Solution

Adiabatic Materials’ electrochemical synthesis platform was developed by three Harvard labs over 15 years working to develop aqueous organic materials for energy storage applications. They recently discovered an unexpected application of these “battery molecules.” After they are charged to a high energy state, they can be used as mediators to drive specific chemical reactions, in particular, performing selective oxidation and reduction reactions. Adiabatic Materials has successfully demonstrated this platform on targets ranging from the commodity chemical hydrogen peroxide, to dozens of hard to make, high value pharmaceutical compounds.
