Funding
- Fervo Energy, which is working to deliver next-generation, carbon-free geothermal energy, raised $244M, including from Greentown partner Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Additionally, a Fervo Energy pilot was selected by the Biden-Harris Administration as one of three projects to receive up to $60M in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to scale enhanced geothermal systems.
- Eden, which breaks rocks with electricity to increase subsurface permeability, received $1.4M in ARPA-E Awards to develop stimulated geologic hydrogen technologies.
- Syzygy Plasmonics, which is developing a new type of photocatalytic chemical reactor, signed a strategic investment agreement with Zeon Corporation to develop new methods for manufacturing materials.
- Solidec, a startup that upgrades molecular building blocks into pure chemicals and fuels without fossil-fuel emissions, received the One Small Step $100k Grant from The Office of Innovation at Rice University in support of lab-stage projects.
- Greentown alum Celadyne secured a $4.5M seed round to accelerate industrial decarbonization with durable fuel cells and inexpensive green hydrogen.
- Greentown alum PolyJoule, which pioneers a conductive polymer battery technology, received VIABILITY Recycling Grant Funding to help increase efforts toward post-consumer PVC recycling.
- Greentown alum Type One Energy, a startup developing a competitive stellarator fusion energy system, was selected to receive funding through Tennessee’s new $50M nuclear energy development fund and is building its first prototype at one of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s shuttered coal plants.
Partnerships + Deployment
- SolarKal facilitated the acceptance of 13 commercial solar projects in the New Jersey Community Solar program, contributing a total of 12 MW of renewable energy.
- Fervo Energy released results from its Cape Station project that exceed the U.S. Department of Energy’s expectations for enhanced geothermal, demonstrating increased drilling efficiency and significant cost savings via a 70 percent reduction in drilling time.
- Energy Toolbase, a startup aiding solar and energy storage developers to deploy projects more efficiently, finalized commissioning on Ventura Energy’s 3.7-MWh energy-storage portfolio in California for emergency water backup.
- GPR, which is enabling all-condition autonomous vehicle lane keeping using radar and fingerprints of the roadbed, and BTG partnered to sign a multi-year, $40M contract to bring a next-generation positioning system to seaports.
- Sublime Systems completed the first commercial use of its carbon-free cement on a Boston building.
- Flux Marine, which is advancing electric propulsion technology, partnered with Magonis to revolutionize the boating industry with cutting-edge electric power.
- KUBO Greenhouse Projects, which is working to enable the next generation of entrepreneurs to grow more food using fewer resources, completed a new 24-acre greenhouse facility for Windset Farms.
- Greentown alum RightHand Robotics partnered with Staples to bring AI-powered robots to fulfillment centers across the United States.
- Greentown alum WeaveGrid partnered with Toyota for direct integration with both Toyota and Lexus battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
- Greentown alum MITO Material Solutions partnered with Vartega to create a unique, graphene-enhanced carbon fiber composite.
Awards + Recognition
- Eden and SkyH2O, a startup advancing atmospheric water generation, were named in American Inno’s Startups to Watch, both with impressive funding and poised for growth in 2024.
- DrinKicks, focused on repurposing food waste and recycled materials into sustainable goods, won the NFL Players Association Pitch Day and will receive $25k in NFLPA marketing consultation, services, and player activations.
- FluxWorks, a startup creating frictionless magnetic gears, received the Technology in Space Prize, funded by Boeing and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, which manages the International Space Station.
- EarthEn, which enables clean electrification through its CO2-based thermodynamic cycle, won the 2024 Deep Tech Climate Startup Challenge at CES.
- rStream, a startup working to create an autonomous waste-sorting system, was selected for the first-ever MassRobotics Accelerator cohort and received $100k in non-dilutive funding.
- Alma Energy, in partnership with the University of Texas El Paso, received $500,000 in prize funds from TAMEST to advance efforts to extract lithium from hydrothermal waters. The startup’s founder, Hermann Lebit also received a Hill Prize for developing clean, emission-free direct lithium extraction using geothermal energy.
- Eden, SpadXTech, and Sublime Systems were named to BostInno’s 24 Startups to Watch in Boston in 2024.
Acquisitions + Mergers
- Terrapin Geothermics announced a merger with TerraScale to “enhance green infrastructure and renewable power development capabilities.” The new entity will be called Climate Transition Development Corporation.
- CeraPhi Energy, which is developing technology to de-risk the delivery of geothermal projects, acquired former fracking company Third Energy Limited, with plans to repurpose the existing wells into clean geothermal energy centers.
Expansions
- Sublime Systems, a startup developing technology to decarbonize cement making, is expanding its headquarters at Somernova in Somerville, MA by more than 23,000 square feet for its pilot facility and R&D lab.
