Weekly Newsflash: Greentown CEO Receives Award, US Enters Agreement with Denmark, and China Shuts Down 40% of Factories

This week in clean energy, our CEO Emily Reichert was awarded the “Decade of Influence Award” by NECEC. Well deserved!

In other news, Tesla is powering a hospital in Puerto Rico and following through on their promises for assistance. Toyota has announced their deadline for phasing out gas cars, and similarly electric buses are showing a lot of potential! Internationally, China has shut down 40% of their factories in order to keep up with their new strict pollution standards. Finally, the United States has entered an agreement with Denmark to support offshore wind efforts.

  • Tesla is showing that it’s making good on its promise of help to Puerto Rico, with significant progress being made on one solar generation/storage facility on the island.

“Tesla has also been shipping its home Powerwall battery storage units to the island for help restoring the grid, and Musk himself donated $250,000 of his personal money to support relief efforts. Tesla also postponed its electric semi-truck reveal event to November in order to focus on helping establish facilities like this one in Puerto Rico.”

  • Toyota is looking to clean up their vehicle lineup by ending production on all traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) by 2040. The effort is part of the Japanese carmaker’s goal of reducing their vehicular carbon emissions by 90 percent by 2050.

“Vehicles using solely ICE drivetrains wouldn’t align with Toyota’s goal of reducing their vehicles’ carbon dioxide emissions by 90 percent over 2010’s figures by 2050.”

 

Science Alert- China Has Shut Down Up to 40% of Its Factories in an Unprecedented Stand Against Pollution

  • China is in the midst of an all-out blitz on polluters flouting emissions standards, closing tens of thousands of factories in a massive effort to address the nation’s catastrophic pollution problems.

“[B]asically, you’re seeing these inspectors go into factories for surprise inspections. They’re instituting daily fines, and sometimes – in the real severe cases – criminal enforcement. People are getting put in jail.”

 

Reuters- U.S. wind concerns ease as Trump cabinet calls on Denmark to help boost offshore output

  • The United States signed a deal with Denmark on Thursday to expand cooperation on offshore wind power, giving a boost to Europe’s biggest green energy players.
