Walk With Us: South Bronx’s New Community Air Quality Monitoring

September 20 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm EDT

Join South Bronx Unite and QuantAQ during Climate Week NYC for a walking tour!

Residents here in Mott Haven and Port Morris know that polluted air from local industry and utilities is affecting every aspect of our health and quality of life, from womb to grave. Until now empirical data has been scarce, but with a new network of air quality sensors we’re changing that ourselves. Our new project setting up 25 air quality sensors through the neighborhood will provide needed transparency to the community and strengthen our advocacy for healthier outcomes, enhanced public policies and cleaner air.

Join us for a walking tour of the project, exploring different sites while engaging in conversation with community members, organizers, and the air quality experts working together to bring data to the conversation around our disproportionate burden of climate change-causing pollutants. We’ll tour some of the new sensing units, point out polluting sites, and discuss the following along the way:

  • Impact of breathing toxic air from residents’ perspective
  • The technical, organizational, and financial challenges of gathering high-quality, truly local air quality data and how we’re solving them
  • Our vision for clean air in the South Bronx and how this data will provide a necessary first step
