2017 has already been a busy year for Greentown Labs! We are so excited to have on-boarded six new companies in the past 2.5 months one of which is Blue Sky Energy. We’re thrilled to have their team join the Greentown Labs community and eager to share a bit more information about what they do:
Blue Sky Energy designs and manufactures highly efficient, reliable charge controllers for off-grid solar. The company’s products support a variety of system sizes and all battery and panel types. Blue Sky Energy’s products are effective for use on boats, RV’s, PV street lighting, UAV’s, and countless other small-to-medium sized off-grid solar applications.
Blue Sky Energy has a rich and interesting history. Alex MeVay, a graduate of MIT, combined his experiences from solar car racing and an eight-month voyage aboard a small sailboat to form Genasun. His vision was to provide reliable, efficient, and compact MPPT (maximum power point tracking) charge controllers and lithium battery systems for small, off-grid solar applications. Alex’s initial technology was vetted during a 35-day solo sail from Boston to France. In 2014, Genasun acquired California-based Blue Sky Energy to provide a wider scope of off-grid solar charging solutions.
Today, about half of the team operates out of California, with the rest taking up residence at Greentown Labs. Among the Boston-based group is founder/CTO Alex MeVay, COO Jared Craft, Systems-Engineer Alexan Mardigian, and Business Development Director Stefano Luciani. The California office focuses on order fulfillment, assembly, and technical support, while the Boston group manages business development, research, and product development.
What separates Blue Sky Energy from its competitors is incredible efficiency, reliable performance, and patented power management technology that provides extremely accurate MPPT performance. The company provides custom programming solutions across a wide range of battery profiles to optimize charging efficiency in any condition, while maintaining the health of the battery throughout its lifetime of charge cycles. Previous charging technology focused primarily on the prevention of overcharging without the ability to optimize provided by true MPPT technology.
The products Blue Sky Energy creates are typically around one hundred dollars but they are powering equipment that can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. The remarkable reliability and efficiency allows users to rest assured their assets are safe. Blue Sky’s products convert power at up to 99% efficiency, enabling customers to store as much power possible in any weather or lighting condition and thus save money on system sizing without jeopardizing the function of their off-grid applications.
One of the company’s biggest goals is to eliminate complexity and create simple devices. In an industry where feature creep is on the rise, Blue Sky Energy focuses on superior functionality and user friendliness.
Blue Sky Energy is actively working to elevate their profile and their team is eager to share their knowledge and expertise during community events. They are also excited about the Global Center for Cleantech Innovation since it will enable them to test products in different ways and expand their development capabilities.
